Prevention Efforts
The Children’s Advocacy Center spends a great deal of time creating prevention programs and working to deliver them to the youth of Johnson County. In a joint effort with the Johnson County Child Fatality Review Team, which the Center coordinates, the Center has delivered programs on texting and driving, sexting, bullying and cyber bullying and alcohol awareness programs.
In addition to these program Center staff and members of their team have delivered programs on recognizing and reporting abuse for school district staff from across Johnson County. They are also delivering programs to youth that discuss what child abuse is to student populations.
The Center is hard at work on setting up resources to begin training school districts on a new web-based prevention and reporting project called “Think U Know”, that is ran through CEOP (Child Exploitation and On-line Protection Centre) and hope to make this available to schools in 2011. Be watching for more news on this project.
One of the great things about being in the schools this year has been our ability to bring in our Therapy Dogs and K-9 Advocate. Roxxi, owned by Mary Jane Clements, attended career day with center staff and was a huge hit with the kids. Jake, our K-9 Advocate, owned by Drew Stallings, was present at prevention programs this year and was also a star with the kids. We look forward to many new opportunities to offer prevention programs using our canine partners. They do amazing work and we are blessed to have them and their handlers working on behalf of all children in Johnson County.
